The Alpine Valley
generally follows the Ovens River from Harrietville to Myrtleford. Much of it’s catchment is from high slopes located within the Alpine National Park and the Mount Buffalo National Park.
1824, Hume and Hovell,
explored the area naming the Ovens River in honour of Major John Ovens, the Secretary to Thomas Brisbane, the Colonial Governor of New South Wales.
1855 my Great Great Grandfather, James Frederick Mayger,
was the Editor of Ovens & Murray Advertiser. In that same year my Great Grandfather was born in Beechworth.
1860- 1934 Gold Harrietville: The Rose, Thistle & Shamrock Quartz Gold Mine,
was the largest recorded gold producer in the Upper Ovens Gold fields. The area contains a wealth of archaeological and scientific importance for the pivotal role they played since 1851, in the development of Victoria.
1930s Tobacco and Hops industry
started to take hold. After WW2 corrugated iron tobacco drying kilns became a distinctive feature of the valley.
